The Himalayans Rivers are Perennial . They are watered by Glaciers and Rains. The Indus River and its Tributaries also perennial Rivers. But the Ghaggar River is a seasonal river.
Major Rivers flow through Punjab are :- Satluj, Beas, Ravi and Ghaggar
The Satluj
Vedic name of Satluj river is Satudhari. It is the longest one tributary of the Indus River and flows through India and Pakistan. The River is called BACKBONE of PUNJAB because it irrigates the largest area of punjab.
The River Originates from Mansarovar-Rakas lake in Tibet(China) where the river is known as Lancheg Khambab.
Through Ropar district the River enters into Punjab and Near Harike ( TarnTaran District) flows into Beas River. Further the River is also called Satluj. The Satluj River makes natural international Boundary with Pakistan. North of Uch Sharif, the River unites with the Chenab River and forms the Panjnad and finally it flows into the Indus river before merges into Arbean Sea.
Beas River
The vedic name of Beas River is Vipasa. The Beas River is originated from Beas Kund, Himachal Pradesh. It enters into Punjab through Hoshiarpur district and further the river confluence with Satluj river at Harike, TarnTaran. The Beas River is home of Indus Dolphin (State Aquatic Animal of Punjab).
The area between the rivers the Satluj and the Beas is called Doaba or BIST Doab.
Ravi River
The Vedic Name of the River is Purshani. The river is originated from Bara Bhangal, Kangra District in Himachal Pradesh. The River enters into Punjab through Pathankot district. further the River meets into Chenab River in Pakistan.
Battle of the TEN KINGS
The battle of ten Kings was mentioned in 7th Mandala of the Rigveda. It was fought between a Bharat King Sudas and Conferdation of Tribes of Ten Kings. The Battle was fought on the bank of Purshani River ( Ravi River). It resulted in a victory of Sudas.
Ghaggar River
The Vedic name of the River was Sarsawati. It was most sacred river of Vedic time. Once it was tributary of Satluj River. It is known as Hakra in Pakistan. The River is originated from Shivalik Hills of Himachal Pradesh and flows through Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan. The River end into Thar Desert of Rajasthan.
